The Endless Public Health Challenges of the Hajj

Check out this awesome article by Rebecca Kreston of Discover Magazine concerning the public health dimensions of mass gatherings, in particular, the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Water-borne, respiratory, and blood-borne pathogens are only a few of the potential infectious threats posed by the Hajj mass gathering due to a combination of a high-density of worshipers, unsupported health and utilities infrastructure, and religious practices which could facilitate transmission.

Rebecca is also the winner of a 2013 ScienceSeeker Award.
